Getting started as a student

Bloom is an AI tutor that uses your course materials. You can talk through an idea, get feedback on your writing, explore course resources, and check your understanding. This short walkthrough follows a biology student working through why cells shrink in salt water.

Open your course Bloom

Use the link or class code shared by your educator and sign in when prompted. Open the Bloom for your course. If you cannot find it, check that you are using the account your educator invited.

Talk through your thinking

Start with your question and what you think the answer might be. You do not need to be certain. Explain where you are stuck, respond to Bloom's follow-up questions, and check its explanations against your course materials.

In the video, the student initially thinks salt enters a cell by osmosis. Bloom asks them to reconsider which substance moves. Watch the chat example at 0:11, or read how to ask effective questions.

Write on Canvas and get feedback

Open the Workspace and choose Canvas. Write your explanation, then ask Bloom for feedback in the conversation beside it. Ask about a specific concern, such as whether your reasoning is clear or whether you have stated an important assumption. Use the feedback to revise your own work.

Watch Canvas and feedback at 0:24. For more detail, see getting started with Canvas.

Learn beside your course resources

Choose Library in the Workspace to open an available reading or other course resource alongside chat. Ask about a passage, diagram, or idea while keeping the source in view. Which resources you can open depends on the access your educator has given them.

Watch the Library example at 0:42.

Check understanding with quizzes and activities

Open Quizzes and choose an available course quiz. Answer the question, explain your reasoning when prompted, and submit. Read the feedback and revisit anything you are unsure about. See taking a quiz or watch at 0:57.

Activities are learning experiences set by your educator. Read the task, make a prediction, and work through it with Bloom. Be ready to explain or revise your reasoning when it asks a follow-up question. Watch the activity example at 1:09.

Explain the idea in your own words

After practising with Bloom, try explaining the idea without its help or applying it to a new example. If you get stuck, bring back the specific part you could not explain. Follow your educator's rules for AI use in assignments and assessments.
